Post New Project: 1953 F-100
Looks like I'm getting a new project. At work, we've got a fair '53 F-100 and a '76 Caddy 500. I'm probably going to buy them and a TH-400 tomorrow.

I want something I can build with little cost, build to have some fun and get some experience, and then sell. Hopefully for a profit, but I'm getting it cheap enough that even if I sell it for a little bit of a loss, I won't mind since I had some fun and got a lot of experience.

Post Re: New Project
I've got some on my computer at work that I'll post if I get a chance tomorrow. I'm just waiting to see if the 500 will still be there. Literally, not five minutes before I talked to my boss about it, some guy from Florida called on the engine. Shipping was going to be $225, so knock on wood, he won't call back. My boss said he had through tomorrow to call back. If that falls through, we still have a Buick 350 that, while not nearly as cool, I may consider.

The purpose of this project is to get some experience building a vehicle that has no sentimental value, so I won't be upset if I screw it up and hopefully I won't cry when it comes time to sell it.

What I know:
'76 Caddy 500
TH-400

What I'm considering:
Camaro front clip (no Mustang IIs in the yard)
Jaguar IRS
mild chop
port and polish heads, maybe a cam

I think this would be a good candidate for twin turbos if I could find some decent, relatively cheap ones. It's a smog engine with low compression and HP, but still almost 400 ft. lbs of torque, so turbo lag wouldn't be a problem. I'm just concerned that by the time the turbos spool up, the engine will be at the end of its RPM range.

I just have to find the right balance between things to try on this truck and doing too much more to it than it's worth.

Sounds like a great project. Several years ago, one of the performance mags ( PHR, HR, etc) did a great write up on building the caddy engine so you might check the archives and see if any of that would help.

I'm getting what looks to be a pretty good pair of front fenders and hood off of an F-600 we've got here, so it won't be as rough as the current front end makes it look.

It could be yours for 49.99. It's "vintage." :haha:

It's nice being able to see pics now, isn't it, Woody? I'm thinking about putting in that Town Car seat that I posted up here a little while back. Have to build some tall brackets, though. I've thought about doing a pie cut on the hood just for kicks and giggles.

Post Re: New Project
After several suggestions over on the HAMB, I believe I'll be going with a full Jaguar suspension. There were a couple guys running a 427 and Caddy 500 who said they hadn't had any trouble out of their IRS, so maybe it'll be ok as long as I'm not rough on it. They convinced me to go with the IFS out of the same car as well. Did I mention that Jags use a Chevy 4 3/4" bolt pattern?
