Post My 3500 HD on a Budget Build
Ok, some of you may remember several years ago (six to be exact) I started to build a 71 C-30. With the help of my students and the Collision program here at school, we cleaned and painted the frame, rebuilt the front suspension, built a Dana 70hd and made it a rolling chasis. Had all the machine work done on the 402 and collected all the engine parts (pistons, machined crank, cam, lifters, gaskets, rings, bearings, etc.). Then ran out of time and $$$ (more an issue of $$ than time. lol). A few years ago, I got another frame, a hd with an 11000# rear axle and last year traded for a motor home chasis with ten lug running gear and disc brakes on the back then traded some work for the 454/400 out of the MH.
Back in January of last year, Debbie lost her job and with no un-employment things strarted getting real tight, to the point that I started selling off and scrapping out things including the frame I had cleaned and painted, saving the suspension and diff. I put the 454/400 up for sale but only got one offer/insult.
Long story short, I got to looking around at the stuff that was too good to scrap but no one wanted to buy and decided to start putting the truck together. So far I have spent $45 for a gallon of satin black rustoleum, two cans of Chevy orange and a set of bbc intake gaskets.
I have the rear end bolted in and last night finished puting the front suspension and steering together making it a roller again. I will be using the factory flat bed I got from Ron and various sheet metal I have collected over the years (again, too good to scrap but no one wants to buy).
My next step is to presure wash the frame and hit it in a place or two with a wire brush and paint it then swap intakes on the bb, paint it and set it in the frame. I am at a crossroads on the cab, after some inspection last night, I found some rust over the windshield but it does have the cab lights I want to use.. I also have the cab coming back to me off my old 4X4 but i has issues also but it would be more of a "plug and play".
I know I am going to hear "where are the pics" and will do the best I can.
Here are the details:
71 GMC 3500
14" five lug rotors on the front
Dana 70hd 11000# rear with disc brakes (ten bolt wheels)
19.5 Wheels
454 with throttle body
4L80E trans (tranny and tbi salvaged from a bus we junked out)
Factory installed flat bed
A/C
Ps
Hydro boost brakes (from MH)

And any other accessories I might have left.

Looking forward to it, and just because you asked, "Where are the pics?"

To be taken. Due to technical difficulties here, I may take some with my phone and get someone to post them for me. Or, with my camera and e-mail them to someone.

I'd be more than happy to post pics for ya, David. Just let me know.

It's good to see you making some progress. It must feel pretty good.

Thanks Matt. I have mixed feelings about it. With Debbie out of work, things are beyond tight but no one seems interested in the stuff I have left. My only other option is to scrap it but I don't feel good about that either.

Tell me about it brother. I'm not going to give my stuff away but no one wants to buy it. So we will wait.

I'm willing to sell cheap but $500 for a 454/400 combo? Jeesh.

I'm confused. Are you parting out this project?

Yes and No. The original frame I started with I did part out, keeping the rebuilt front suspension and D70hd rear. I'm using a different frame, rear end and front spindles making it a true 11000# GVWR truck.

Alright. So is the 454/400 for sale as referenced above?

I think that is what somebody offered him, not what he priced it at. Had it ever been offered at that price I would have it in my 70 pro street truck and be grinning like the cat that ate canary.

At this time, the only thing not for sale is Debbie.
83 454 out of a motor home, 43k, 400 turbo with parking brake, should have straight cut gears. Heard it run before they pulled it out, sounded good. Complete package, engine, trans and long tube headers. $975. Just engine $700

I knew it couldn't be $500. Still a good price tho.

David Your killing me with all these BBC's for sale!! I really want one for my 86 but the crate 350 in it is still running good so I cant justify it with all the shiny stuff I have to order for it to put it back on the road and not make my new paint look like crap. But someday!!! :punk:

Ok, for somewhat of an update. 454 is gone, former student bought it to go in his 79 dually camper special. Frame is painted and back in the shed. Waiting for cab from my 72 K2500 to come back from Ga so I can do some work on it. 402 is in my basement to be assembled sometime this winter. Everthing still for sale.

Not much has changed. Did get the engine stand moved down to the house but that is about it. Deb is still out of work so the 402 went on CG but only had one text inquiry and it was one of those "I'll send a cashiers check and have it picked up" deals. If something doesn't give soon, I may be completely out of the truck business.
