Post Airplane!
Well, I finally got a chance to take some more pics with my new 17" wheel combo. The only thing I love as much, if not more, than old Chevy trucks is old piston driven warbirds. The only problem is most of them are WWII vintage, which is a couple decades before our trucks were made. Our trucks were made in the height of the Vietnam War, which mostly used jet propelled aircraft. There were a few exceptions, though. I talked to our local warbird museum (http://www.tnairmuseum.com) and they recently purchased a Vietnam War veteran A1H Skyraider. The Skyraider was used mostly as ground troop support, taking out ground targets with rockets, guns, and dropping napalm. It's actually the predecessor to the A10 Warthog used today. The Skyraider was never intended to dogfight, but they did rack up a few lucky(or desperate) Mig kills. They said I could take some photos with the planes as backgrounds.

The day I went, they didn't have the Skyraider out, but they did have this T-28 training plane. The T-28's also saw some action during the Vietnam War. They were used mostly as Recon, but some were used for ground support missions.

I thought this was just a cool shot.

They did open the hangar and let me pull in to take some shots with the Skyraider.

At first, I didn't like this shot at all, until I really looked at it, then I thought it was really kinda neat.

And finally, one of just the truck.

I hope you guys enjoy the pics and the history lesson.

Sweet! What kind of strings did you have to pull to get in the hanger with the truck?

I'm glad you guys like the pics.

Woody, I actually didn't have to pull any strings. He was opening the hangar to put the T28 back in anyway, and told me I could pull in next to the other plane.

The pilot, who is also the ownwer/admin. of the museum, is a super nice guy. He also likes Chevys. He actually had the T-28 out and had just come back in from flying with a friend in a P-51 Mustang. The Mustang was heading back to Knoxville and made a scrafe(sp?) pass before heading off.

They also have a P-47D (supercharged) plane that is like the centerpeice of their museum. It's the plane on the web page linked above. I went to the museum one day when there were several WWII veterans there. One of them was a P-47 pilot. His trach. was removed, so he talked through one of those microphones held to his throat. It was hard to understand him, but he was telling some stories about his flights. Neal was out flying the P-47 and came down towards the crowd like he was making a scrafe run. We were all watching when someone in the crowd said, "Just imagine how a German would've felt seeing that sight." That made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Nothing like the sound of a Recip. Every once and a while the DC-3 from Remote Area Medical will come lumbering through, you can hear it for miles both ways.
