Post Electrical Gremlin...
1970 with a 350. Replaced the intake this weekend. Got everything back together and fired the truck up. Ran great and reached in to kill it but before I did it died, then wouldnt restart. Pulled the #1 plug and held it against the exhaust manifold and it was not firing. Last night I pulled the power plug from the dist and had my wife try to crank it while I held a test light in the plug and it had no power, the wire had no power back to the wire block on the firewall. ran a direct wire from the battery + to the dist and it started for a split second then died again and nothing... Any ideas??

Ive got a volt meter but never used one before so any ideas/tips would be helpful.

thanks,

Tony

OK, that power wire needs to be a full 12V from a "key on" power source. It should turn the test light on without having to crank the engine. Hooking it directly to the battery isn't a good idea. Sounds like the dist. may be bad. My dad's ElCamino had a similar issues a few years ago. We fixed it with a new dist.

I thought the module as well until he said it started back after trying a different power source. It almost sounds as if the pickup has went bad.

Yah I wasnt sure how it just all of a sudden crapped out. I thought the test light would light up as well when I probed that powder wire but it didn't, which caused me to run a jumper direct from the battery. It's an HEI unit. I guess its better to replace the whole thing or just coil/module?

Thanks for the input guess, I really appreciate it. If I get it done this weekend I'll add what it was.

12 v from the battery will not hurt the dist. but it should have run on it. i would also check the coil you will see melted smooth places up the side meens its bad

Had the control module checked and they said it was good. OHM'd out the coil and it was sporatic so I just bought a whole new distributor. Dropped it in, hooked it up and she purrs like a kitten now.

 at Roy.

Glad you got it figured out. That sounds just like what happened with my dad's ElCamino.
